3rd International NGOs Conference on History and Peace

The Northeast Asian History Foundation and the International NGO History Forum for Peace in East Asia will jointly hold the 3rd International NGO Conference on History and Peace in Insa-dong, Seoul from August 20 (Thursday) through August 23 (Sunday).

Under the theme of “History Education for Historical Reconciliation in East Asia,” the event will be attended by over 200 NGO officials, historians and history teachers from around 20 countries worldwide to have extensive discussions on the role of history education in achieving historical reconciliation and establishing peace culture in East Asia.

At the opening ceremony of the Conference, Samuel Lee, the former secretary-general of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, gives a keynote lecture on peace in East Asia and the role of history education. Mark Seldon, a senior research associate in the East Asia Program at Cornell University, explores solutions to historical conflicts in the international community—especially in East Asia. Simone Lässig, the director of the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, examines how history education has contributed to establishing peace in Europe; Utsumi Aiko, a visiting professor at Waseda University Graduate School who is well known in Korea as a researcher of Classes B and C war criminals, takes a close look at East Asian history education seen from the viewpoint of peace education practitioner.

The Conference will consist of a keynote lecture, five symposiums, 11 workshops and international seminars as well as other various sub-events such as “Moving History Class,” “Lounge Talk,” “Korean Night” and “Walking Tour.”
