The ‘Annotated Translation of the Stories of Foreign Nations in the Official Histories of China’ project involves the translation, annotation, and publication of 'The Stories of Foreign Nations (外國傳)' from official histories published by traditional Chinese dynasties, i.e. written records about foreign nations or other peoples in regions surrounding China. The stories of foreign nations to translate and publish for this project were selected from a total of 22 official histories of China, from Records of the Great Historian (史記) by Sima Qian of the Han Dynasty to History of Ming (明史) published in the Qing Dynasty. And they cover 'foreign nations' in vast regions, including not only the maritime region encompassing Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, and the Philippines, but also the Central Asian region known to China as the 'Western Regions' encompassing Tibet, Iran, and Arabia, and the northern region encompassing Mongolia. Over twenty experts participated in this project of writing introductions and editing, translating, and annotating the Chinese official histories. While the translation was faithful to the original text, notes were added to Sino-centric expressions to explain their meanings. In particular, in order to help the reader overcome the limited Sino-centric nature of 'official history' and get the correct picture of the time, efforts were made to review as many historical records or archaeological artifacts of those foreign countries and peoples as possible.
